Panini Keypad is a new usability technology that offers easy typing and integrated interoperation between all Indian languages on the mobile phone and other devices. The languages supported are Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Oriya, Assamese.

Typing is through a virtual keypad with the innovation of CleverTexting (statistical predictive texting) that offers ergonomic single keypress typing and a Basic Mode of a steerable moving keymask that facilititates faster and easier typing.

Panini supports switching between languages, automatic transliteration between them and supports SMS compression for all Indian languages.

The Java implementations of the multilingual keypad -

"Panini" can be installed on any phone that supports Java applications (games etc). Download from this website, unzip, and then transfer the two tiny files (.jad & .jar) to your phone over its USB cable or Bluetooth. Or direct download to phone over GPRS.

Installation is easy, just put the files in any folder (or your phones Application folder) and run the software.

Then start the Send Message Midlet

There are no characters permanently mapped to the keypad. They are on the screen. In CleverTexting Mode - look for the character on the screen and press the indicated key. If the character is not on the screen, press the Next List button.Characters are dynamically allocated. In the Basic Mode, move the 3x4 Grid over the character map using the Navigator keys (up,down, right, left) and use the numeric keys to type. Whatever characters the grid is lying over will be what is typed. On Touchscreen phones, type directly.

You can go to Options | Change Language to choose some other language to type in. All the languages use the same layout of alphabets, so you could actually quite easily type even in a language whose script you are not familiar with.

After you have finished your message, choose Send from Options, it shows you the text you have composed ( which you may edit here again ). Choose Send. Enter the number to send to, or choose from the Address book and send the SMS.

You can Choose Options | Compress to benefit from Panini's SMS compression abilities. Indian language SMS will be compressed 300% (210 characters instead of 70 in one SMS). Compressed SMS need the Panini application to be present in the receivers phone. Uncompressed SMS are delivered to all kind of phones normally.

In the Options, you can also choose to Convert Language. Then you can change the content of your SMS into some other language before sending. It will be shown in that language in the receivers phone if the phone supports that font.

Even in a case where your own phone doesn't support the font of a particular language, whatever you type will be shown by empty square boxes, the content is however being composed correctly and if you send that message to another phone which supports that font, it will be displayed correctly. Your phone may not be able to display the font but the composition is correct. Similarly, you may receive a message that displays square boxes, so you can read it in a language that your phone supports by converting. You can otherwise read in English (Roman Script) Insist on buying phones with Indian language fonts installed.

Distributing: We encourage you to freely distribute this application to your friends etc. You can transfer the application from phone to phone over Bluetooth/Memory Card transfer/USB Cable/Others. You can also send over Email etc or ask your friends to download the latest version directly from this website. You may also make it available for download from your own website/blog or link to our website.

Panini is tiny in size and can easily be implemented into the hardware of the most basic phones by phone manufacturers as well as distributed in SIM cards by Telecom operators.
